Oak
Grove Tiger Head Football Coach Vic
Dalrymple ranks among the leaders of
the Louisiana High School Athletic
Association (LHSAA) Elite Coaches Club
with over 270 career wins as a head
coach. Coach Dalrymple has compiled an
impressive .789 winning percentage over
27 years while claiming four state
championship titles. He currently ranks
5th in Prep Classic appearances (7
total) among all coaches in all
classifications.
In
addition to being recognized as one of
Louisiana's most successful high school
football coaches, Coach Dalrymple has
also become well known for his
down-to-earth conversation style. This
page is dedicated to some of the more
colorful "Vic-isms":
|
."When
all the life boats were gone and we
were going down with the ship, we
managed to put together a drive"
Down 12-7 to Oberlin in 2007 Regional
playoff round, Oak Grove scored with
1:57 left , then scored again with 42
seconds to win 20-12.
|
"I
know a lot of people who would trade a
date with Shania Twain for a situation
like
that"
Referring to Oak Grove's 11th straight
quarterfinal appearance in
2007.
|
"We're
running around here like we're on a
greased
surfboard".
Team execution in 2007 had been
inconsistent at best in spite of a 6-2
record through the first 8
weeks.
|
"We
showed up wanting to ride the white
horse but not wanting to feed
him"
Referring to the 2007 district loss to
Delhi Charter after claiming the #1
ranking in power points the week
before.
|
"If
we can go down to Kentwood and be
successful, we'll be ready for another
big bite of something
solid".
A 2006 quarterfinal win over Kentwood
would set up a semi-final match with
Evangel or Calvary Baptist. Kentwood
beat Oak Grove 39-21.
|
"Fundamentally,
we still need a lot of scratchin' and
sniffin'. "
The 2005 team had not progressed at a
satisfactory pace and still needed a
lot of rep's.
|
"He
(Dunham Coach Thibodeaux) says the
strength of his team is defense, but
then they jump out there and score 41
points against Montgomery. It's kinda
like that movie 'Tombstone'; they may
not be as sick as they make out to
be."
Coach Thibodeaux may have
underestimated the strength of his
offense...or overstated the strength of
his defense. In any event, Oak Grove
won the 2005 Regional matchup
40-20.
|
"You'd
feel like you was cheatin' if you
didn't play somebody real good on the
road."
Referring to the possibility of playing
the first three playoff games at home
in 2005 as a #1 seed. Oak Grove lost to
St. John 41-40 in the quarterfinals on
the road.
|
"It's
pretty neat. These are these guys'
glory days. We could squat and watch it
go over our heads but it makes for some
really neat stories to tell their sons
someday. Of course, to tell your sons
stories you gotta have a good ending.
It can't be like the
Titanic."
Regarding the rare opportunity of
having to play 3 defending state
champions to win the 2005 1A state
title. Those on sank ships rarely get
back to port to tell others about the
trip. Oak Grove lost out in the
quarterfinals to St. John and never
faced Evangel, West St. John, or
Dunham.
|
"You
could throw a hand grenade in the
locker room with those guys and the
ones who stagger out could whip just
about anything [in Class 1A]."
Referring to the 2005 Evangel Eagles
after they dropped from Class 5A to
Class 1A. Evangel won back-to-back
state titles in Class
1A.
|
"Moving
up the food
chain".
Progressing through the playoffs to
face bigger and better
teams.
|
"You
could have thrown a dead rat up there
and not got a squeal out of
'em."
Referring to fan response during Oak
Grove's 20-47 home loss to Sterlington
in 2005.
|
"Playing
the caliber of teams we've played
early, any slack in your drawers and
it's gonna show
up."
A reference to Oak Grove's tough 2005
non-district schedule.
|
"I
told the boys after the game that I was
real proud of them. Then Monday, after
looking at the game tape, I told 'em I
got over
it".
Following a not-so-pretty 48-32 win
over Rayville in 2005.
|
"We
learned some things, made some
adjustments, and all is well in
Who-ville".
Following a 47-20 loss to Sterlington
in 2005. Oak Grove finished the season
11-2 and made it to the quarterfinals
that year.
|
"What
we've been doin' has been real excitin'
to watch...some of it has been
self-inflicted
excitement".
Oak Grove scored 199 points in the
first five games of 2005 while giving
up 141 points.
|
"We
like to keep the ball a lot but every
once in awhile we'll score quickly and
mess up a good long drive".
Oak Grove enjoys ball control offense
but can break the big play at any time.
|
"They
have given us a good thrashin' and made
us like
it."
Referring to the Sterlington Panthers'
dominance of Oak Grove. The Panthers
won the series from 2001 to 2006.
|
"I'm
old school. All I know is when things
don't go right, you just keep turning
the crank until all the impurities fly
out".
Coach Vic grew up with traditional,
hard-work values. Sometimes things have
to get worse before they get
better.
|
"If
you look at that positively (constant
lineup changes), we have been able to
see other guys step up and get playing
time. But we're looking for consistency
and it's put a chunk in our
throat."
Referring to his team's inconsistency.
It hasn't been an easy thing to
swallow.
|
"That's
Paul Bunyan
big."
REALLY BIG!!!
|
"It
was a real
toe-nailer."
Close contest where the fans bite all
of their fingernails then start on
their toenails.
|
"We
are just trying to get to that
level...we'll crawl up there and peek
at it, but we won't chew it up and
swallow
it."
The 2005 team will flirt with the level
of play needed for championship
success, but can't seem to consistently
play at that level.
|
"They
really cowboyed up toward the end there
and finally got the job
done."
Referring to a close 28-17 win over OCS
in 2005.
|
"They
all know that when I panic, the first
thing I'm going to do is to inflict
something on them that will make them
decide if they want in or
out."
Alluding to the type of practice
session his players will face following
a poor performance on the
field.
|
"Geeked
up"
Fired up and ready to
play.
|
"It's
real excitin' to watch some of those
guys toward the end of the season and
their eyes start to clear
up."
Expressing the thrill of seeing
individual performance improve as the
season progresses.
|
"Last
year, that was the most heralded game
in the history of sports. It was in the
newspaper about 37 freaking
times."
Now famous quote referring to
Sterlington's 35-33 win over Oak Grove
in 2001. The Panthers went on to win
the series for six consecutive
years.
